HRM Advises Reduced Alderney Ferry Service

USPA NEWS - AS OF MAY 25, 2026---The Halifax Regional Municipality is informing residents of a temporary reduction in the Alderney Ferry service. As of 2:15 p.m. today, the service will operate at 30-minute intervals instead of every 15 minutes. This revised schedule will be in effect on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 8:15 p.m. until further notice.

The reduction in service is due to necessary repairs on the Christopher Stannix vessel, which is experiencing a steering issue that necessitates the replacement of specific parts. A similar technical issue was recently experienced by the Vincent Coleman vessel, requiring proprietary manufactured parts. These repairs are complex, require specialized expertise, and involve internationally sourced parts that must be manufactured and are not readily available as standard catalogued parts.

Halifax Transit personnel are collaborating with an international supplier in Europe to procure the necessary components to expedite repairs as soon as possible. An update will be provided when additional information becomes available, as timing is contingent upon the delivery of these components.

The Woodside Ferry service has also experienced disruptions due to the steering issue with the Christopher Stannix vessel, but will maintain regular weekday schedule, with service running every 15 minutes during peak hours. The Craig Blake vessel is currently undergoing scheduled inspections, as well as a significant repair, and will not be available for service until later this year.

Safety remains the paramount concern, and no ferry will resume operations until all necessary repairs and safety inspections are completed. The municipality acknowledges that recent disruptions have affected riders and expresses gratitude to residents for their patience as Halifax Transit personnel strive to reinstate dependable service levels as expeditiously as possible.
